Sight and Sound's "Jonah" coming to Lancaster

Many guests at the Historic Smithton Inn have come to Lancaster County specifically to catch a show at Sight and Sound Theater. Sight and Sound has earned it's spot as the top tourist attraction in the county by consistently delivering outstanding and unexpectedly "grand" performances of religiously based stories. The BUZZ around town is that Jonah, their newest show scheduled to open its 1-year run on March 10th, will be their best show ever!

Lititz Fire and Ice Festival 2012

Lancaster County has LOTS of festivals throughout the year, but not really so many in the winter months... which is what makes the Lititz Fire and Ice Festival so special. During the blustery month of February, we are treated to a healthy dose of great fun and food in the historic town of Lititz, a mere 8 miles from the Historic Smithton Inn!

• Ice Sculptures will begin to be placed Friday mid-morning weather permitting throughout Main and Broad Streets.

• Friday Night Block Party, Main Street Lititz, 5 pm-9 pm. Activities include live ice carving, DJ, entertainment, fire eater, marshmallow roast, wing eating contest, food.

• Saturday activities Chili Cook Off, new location! Warwick High School cafeteria, 301 West Orange Street, 11am-3 pm. Button required for entrance, $5 before the event, $7 at the door. Limited to 1200. Approximately 15 chefs will volunteer their talents and their chili to raise money for their choice of charities. Lancaster County Mud Sales Will Be Here Soon

PA Dutch Country has many special traditions, and one of our personal favorites is definitely Lancaster County's annual Mud Sales!

Their name may be funny, but they're SERIOUSLY great events to experience local culture and pick up some great locally-made goodies... and besides, the silly name is part of the charm of these annual sales. The name comes from the typical condition of the fields where the sales take place. These annual fire-company fundraisers bring out a variety of shoppers: Amish, Mennonite, other locals and tourists from near and far make the trek both for the wonderful and unique shopping opportunity, as well as the great people-watching!

The Gift of Lights Lancaster Holiday Display

For something new to do this holiday season, check out the Lancaster County holiday lights display at Elizabeth Farms. The "Gift of Lights"is a drive-thru experience which promises to be an unforgettable adventure designed especially for the entire family. Elizabeth Farms is a short drive west on 322 from the Historic Smithton Inn, making us an ideal bed and breakfast to call home as you enjoy a Lancaster County Christmas!

The drive-thru spans approximately one mile and features hundreds of thousands of LED lights twinkling with music, in dazzling seasonal displays.

The Gift of Lights runs from Nov. 18 through Jan.1, including Christmas Day, from 5 to 9 p.m. Sundays through Thursdays and Fridays and Saturdays from 5 to 10 p.m.

Admission is $15 per vehicle, and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to Toys for Tots and Goodwill Keystone Area. Tickets can be purchased at Elizabeth Farms, or in advance at the Historic Smithton Inn.

For anyone worried about the environmental consequences of a million-plus light display, you can rest easy knowing that the Gift of Lights is an environment-friendly attraction. The LED lights use much less electricity (only 4 watts for a 70-light string) and have a much greater lifespan than incandescent lamps.

Additionally, Elizabeth Farms features more than 200 acres of evergreens, horse-drawn wagons, Santa's Workshop, a model train and festive holiday displays.

The Musical "Cats" in Ephrata, December 8 - 23

One of the most unconventional musicals ever to become an international sensation is coming to the Ephrata Performing Arts Center (EPAC) this December. Lancaster County Businesses Love Veterans!

…and they’re willing to prove it! On November 10th, many Lancaster County businesses will be opening their doors to veterans, offering goods and services for free or at considerable discounts. They have been invited to participate in a special nationwide program by the association of innkeepers, Authentic Bed & Breakfasts of Lancaster County (ABBLC), of which the Historic Smithton Inn is a member.

The B&Bs for Vets Program:
The Historic Smithton will join hundreds of inns and B&Bs throughout the U.S. and Canada in honoring active and retired veterans with complimentary rooms in recognition of Veteran’s Day (all 7 rooms have been reserved, 2 by guests we hosted last year!). The campaign, called B&Bs for Vets, enlists inns and B&Bs to open their doors with complimentary stays for vets on November 10, 2011 so they can wake up on Veteran’s Day to a wonderful breakfast after a great night’s sleep in a B&B. To date, Pennsylvania has more B&B’s participating in this program than any other state.

The Expanded Lancaster County Program:
What's truly exciting is that the Authentic Bed and Breakfasts of Lancaster County will offer not only a free room for the night, but has organized cooperation from MANY other businesses in the County who are offering exclusive discounts for Vets. It's because of the B&B owners' and the Association's strong relationship with local business owners that this expanded program came about.

George Winston Returns to the Ephrata Main Theater

George Winston, the legendary pianist and entertainer, is making a return visit to Ephrata for a holiday concert at the Ephrata Main Theater, located just 1 mile from the Historic Smithton Inn.

Margarita Breakfast Pizza a la Historic Smithton Inn

Ever since I can remember, I've LOVED eating pizza for breakfast, but it's not exactly something I'd actually serve to GUESTS of our Lancaster Bed and Breakfast... that is until now! This recipe is as easy to make as it is delicious. It's best with fresh ingredients, but just like any pizza recipe, you can play with it to use whatever delicious ingredients you have on hand.

Serves 8 - 12

Ingredients:

1 Roll of Pillsbury Pizza Crust (I prefer the thin crust)
1 cup fresh pesto
1 1/2 cup chopped tomatoes
1 tbsp olive oil
12 eggs
1/4 cup heavy cream
4 tbsp unsalted butter
1 cup Mozzarella Cheese
1/2 cup fresh basil, divided
salt & pepper to taste

Step One - Prepare for Assembly:

Pre-heat your oven to 400 degrees. Spray a cookie sheet with non-stick spray and unroll the pizza dough onto the sheet, spreading it with your fingers so it reaches the sides.

Bake the dough for 6 minutes, or until it just starts to become golden brown. Remove from the oven and allow to cool.

Once cool, cut the crust into rectangular slices as you would a pizza, typically 8-12 slices.While your crust is baking, toss together your chopped tomatoes with the olive oil and a dash of salt and pepper, set aside.

Next you prepare the scrambled eggs: Whisk together eggs, heavy cream, 1 tbsp of chopped fresh basil and a dash of salt & pepper.

Melt butter in a large non-stick skillet. When the butter in the pan is hot and bubbling (but not brown), pour in the eggs. Don't stir! Let the eggs cook for up to a minute or until the bottom starts to set, then use a spatula to gently push one edge of the egg into the center of the pan, while tilting the pan to allow the still liquid egg to flow in underneath. Repeat with the other edges, until there's no liquid left.

Step Two: Assemble and Bake:

Reduce your oven temp to 375 degrees

Arrange your pizza crust on a cookie sheet that's been sprayed with non-stick spray.

Spread 1 Tbsp of fresh pesto over each slice

Next add a layer of scrambled eggs, sprinkle the eggs with your chopped tomatoes, and finally, top with Mozzarella cheese.

Put into the oven and bake for 10 minutes

Serve:
Top your Margarita Breakfast Pizza with 1 Tbsp chopped fresh basil, which is delicious, and equally important, makes the dish LOOK great. Serve with a side of Chicken Caprese Sausage and fresh pesto.

Mysterious, Melanchly & Macabre at the Ephrata Cloister

National Clock and Watch Museum: The National Watch and Clock Museum was officially opened to the public in 1977 with fewer than 1,000 items. The Amish Project

The Amish Project is a fictional exploration of the Nickel Mines schoolhouse shooting in an Amish community, and the path of forgiveness and compassion forged in its wake. The Amish Project made its original debut at the New York International Fringe Festival in the summer of 2008 and instantly generated buzz in the theatre community.

Introduced by Dickey as a one-woman off-Broadway play, The New York Times hailed her tapestry of interwoven monologues as "Extraordinary," "compelling" and "a remarkable piece of writing." "This is not a re-enactment," Mellinger stressed. "It focuses mainly on the aftermath of the horrible crime. There is nothing graphic but there are some uncomfortable ideas expressed. All of the characters are fictional, although representative of both the Amish and the English communities."

To give the play greater theatrical heft, Mellinger is transforming Dickey's one-woman show into a conventionally cast play, with separate actors portraying each character: Kayla Hall as Anna, a young Amish victim; Lauren Elledge as Velda, her younger sister and fellow victim; Matt Good as Eddie Stuckey, the gunman; Kathy Robb as Carol Stuckey, his widow; Paola Gonzalez as America, a young Hispanic grocery clerk; Robyn Payne as Sherry, a non-Amish neighbor; and Larry Gessler as Bill North, a professor and scholar on Amish culture.

"The Amish Project" will be performed in the Sharadin-Bigler Theatre in Ephrata at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30, under the sponsorship of the Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. Lancaster County hosts National Beard and Moustache Championships

One of my favorite things about owning a Lancaster County Bed and Breakfast is the shear variety of unique and fun events we have going on, pretty much ALL the time! Case in point: Lancaster County is playing host to the The Second Annual $5000 Beard Team USA National Beard and Moustache Championships on October 8, 2011 at the Clipper Magazine Stadium, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, just 12 miles from the Historic Smithton Inn!!!

Competition will take place in five categories, including moustache, partial beard, full beard groomed, full beard natural, and freestyle. A total of $5000 ($1000 per category) in cash will be awarded to the winners, with the first place winners taking home $600 each, second best $300, and third place $100.

Lancaster is well known for its Amish community that has been growing beards for America in the surrounding area for nearly 300 years. Participants in the Nationals will have a unique chance to experience Amish culture as part of the Nationals Weekend.

The entry fee for contestants will be $40. Admission for spectators will be $10.

2011 Ephrata Fair - Stay and Play!

The autumn months are the most popular time to visit Lancaster County for a number of reasons, including typically great weather, fall harvest activities, and plenty of things to do including local fairs and festivals. My favorite fair of all is our local one, the Grand-Daddy of all street fairs in Pennsylvania, the Ephrata Fair... now in their 93rd year!

Not familiar with the Ephrata Fair? Well, it’s definitely a Lancaster County event worth experiencing…click on this video for a quick overview.

During the week of September 20 - 24, Pennsylvania's largest Street Fair transforms the streets of downtown Ephrata from busy roads with cars and trucks to a week of enjoyment and entertainment. Both Main and State Streets (downtown) are closed to make room for rides and local food stands, offering fun, relaxation and a chance to mingle with friends. Also scattered throughout town are displays of food, vegetables, crafts and the Agriculture exhibit at the park.

Pennsylvania Civil War Road Show Comes to Ephrata

As all Civil War history buffs know, this year is the 150th Anniversary of the start of the Civil War, and with that milestone comes a multitude of commemorative events and activities. One such event that’s coming to Lancaster County, just 2 miles from the Historic Smithton Inn, is the PA Civil War Road Show.

The Pennsylvania Civil War 150 Road Show is a traveling exhibition housed in an expandable 53-foot tractor-trailer created for Pennsylvania residents and visitors of all ages. From 2011 to 2014, it will travel throughout the Commonwealth (making stops in all 67 counties) bringing its interactive exhibits to each host location. Visitors will also experience related programs and performances under a Civil War-era tent. The road show features hands-on, interactive displays to tell stories that will be engaging for the whole family. From the original “3-D experience” of stereoscopes, to the voices of individual Pennsylvanians, to the scenes of camp and home life, visitors will be immersed in a new understanding of how America’s greatest crisis changed the lives of Pennsylvanians.

One of the great things about Lancaster County is all the fresh produce, which is especially available at this time of year. If you're coming into town, a great way to see the area, meet the locals and eat some great food (both prepared at market, or fresh to bring home) is by strolling through one of our local farmers markets, or driving the backroads and stoping at a roadside stand. Hopefully this will provide you with some tips to help plan your fresh-food journey through the county!

A Day of Wine Tasting in Lancaster County

Fall is the most popular time of the year to visit Lancaster County, and for good reason. We typically have fantastic weather, there are a whole host of art, crafts and music festivals, plus local street fairs... and on top of all that, there's fall harvest, including the GRAPE harvest, at our local vineyards. I thought I'd take the opportunity to map out a one-day tour of these local gems, that you can navigate on your own or we can line up a limo for you take the tour in style through our favorite local limo company, Expressions Limousine.

Mount Hope Winery: Over the course of 208 years, Mount Hope Estate and Winery has grown from a private residence to a flourishing historic estate featuring spectacular events, festivals, and wine tastings. In 1979 the estate was purchased by Chuck Romito, who envisioned it as a place where award-winning, quality wines were produced and sold. Vineyards were planted, wines were made and Mount Hope Estate & Winery opened for business in 1980.

2. Waltz Vineyards: Waltz Vineyards is a small boutique winery in Manheim, Pennsylvania. Waltz features meticulously maintained "world class" vineyards. The owners note, "Our vineyards are meticulously maintained because great wines are grown in the vineyard!" 3. Tamanend: In 2010, Tamanend was named "Best Winery in PA"! The winery was selected for having the best wines, offering wine drinkers the best quality visit to a local winery, and providing the most interesting and unique winery experience in the state. 4. Moon Dancer: Moon Dancer is situated in a French Country Chateau overlooking the beautiful Susquehanna River in Wrightsville. The winery offers premium European Style dry wines as well as select Pennsylvania sweet wines. The charming atmosphere with stunning views of the vineyards and surrounding countryside is Pennsylvania Wine Country at its finest. 5. Nissley: Just down a country lane bordered by tended vines and sun-dappled meadows, this stone-arch winery is set near an 18th-century mill and a winding creek. Catch a Show at American Music Theater During Your Visit to Lancaster County

The American Music Theater (AMT) is just a 20 min drive (16 miles) from Ephrata and the Historic Smithton Inn, and they've got some terrific shows on tap in the coming months.

The AMT Original Show that's getting a lot of good press is Dance Explosion. If you're glued to the TV for 'So You Think You Can Dance', you might want to peal yourself away to see some amazing dancers live and in person!! Click here for more info and to buy tickets for this exciting show. Dance Explosion is billed as "the ultimate combination of dance, sound and rhythm". The show will feature many different styles of dance – from Broadway to ballroom, jazz to contemporary, and everything in between. Dance Explosion is running from August 17th - October 8th.

Zip Line Adventures in Lancaster County? YeeeeeHaaawwww!

Yes, as the title suggests, I was more than a little excited to discover that Lancaster County has its very own Zip Line Adventure spot!!! It's Refreshing Mountain Camp, located in northern Lancaster County in the town of Stevens, just 6 miles from the Historic Smithton Inn in Ephrata.

Their Zip Line Canopy Tour is a series of cables and platforms between 10 and 60 feet off of the ground. Participants are harnessed to a pulley that rides the cable and "zips" from platform to platform through the "canopy" of trees through which the course is built. There are 5 zip lines, with a combined length of over 1400 feet!

Additionally, in the middle of the course, are 9 High Adventure Challenge elements (i.e. climb across a cargo net, walk the "Indiana Jones Bridge", swing the "Monkey Vines") all 30-40 ft in the air.

There was an article published in the Lancaster Intelligencer, "It's a bird, it's a plane, no, it's a zip line!", that gives a great overview, and was how I learned about this nearby treasure to begin with (note to self: send the writer some muffins as a thank you!)

So for the "unique-fun-experience" junkies out there, plan your next adventure to Lancaster County and the Historic Smithton Inn, where a Zip Line Canopy Tour can be just part of your adventure!

Peach Sour Cream Muffins, with FRESH Lancaster County Peaches

Peaches are in season in Lancaster County, so they're playing a prominent role in the breakfast menus at the Historic Smithton Inn these days! Today I'm off to Root's Market in Manheim to pick up my latest batch of locally grown, just picked peaches, so that I'll have plenty of delicious peaches for muffins, breads, stuffed french toast and fresh fruit dishes in the coming days.

One of our guests' favorites is Peach Sour Cream muffins. The sour cream makes these muffins wonderfully moist, and the vanilla gives them a slight 'cake-y' flavor. Try them out for yourself, hopefully you can get hold freshly picked peaches too!

Peach Sour Cream Muffins

Ingredients:
2 cups flour
1 tbsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
2/3 cups sugar
2 eggs
1 cup sour cream
1 tsp milk
1/2 tbsp vanilla
8 tbsp butter (melted)
1 1/2 cups fresh peaches (skin removed)

Directions:

Mix together dry ingredients, set aside
Whisk together wet ingredients.
Combine wet and dry ingredients.
Gently fold in peaches.
Spoon into lined or greased muffin cups
Sprinkle raw sugar on top
Bake at 400 degrees for 17-20 minutes until cooked through and golden on top

Just about mid-summer in Lancaster County, when the heat index is in triple digets and even the swimming pools start loosing their refreshing qualities, I remember that one of my favorite collection of events is right around the corner. I imagine myself as a person in the desert who sees an oasis in the distance... "I can make it!" I convince myself, "in just a couple weeks, the late-summer art festivals will begin"!! In no time at all, I'll be basquing in a sea of unique, special, charming handcrafted goodies that everyone on my Christmas list has grown to love!

Lititz Rotary Craft Show

The Historic Smithton Inn's location in Northern Lancaster County is perfectly situated for maximum art-festival-shopping too, with my favorites located in Lititz, Mt. Gretna, Lancaster and Ephrata! Visit Lancaster County's Newest Attraction - Turkey Hill Experience

Lancaster County has a new attraction which celebrates one of our biggest industries, Dairy! The "Turkey Hill Experience" is an interactive, Disney-style attraction that's fantastic addition to your vacation itinerary. Just a few of the exhibits include milking a mechanical cow, walking through a freezer and taking an 'ice tea personality test'!

Quick-Facts about the attraction include:

26,000 square feet of exhibits, dining areas and retail space.
Nine interactive exhibit areas will allow visitors to learn more about dairy culture, the story of Turkey Hill Dairy, and how the company's top-selling ice cream and iced tea flavors are selected and created.
Exhibits will also feature Lancaster County cultural highlights, including some history of the lower Susquehanna River Valley and the rural farming area surrounding Turkey Hill Dairy.
Visitors will truly experience what it's like to be a Turkey Hill Dairy ice cream maker for a day, including the opportunity to create his or her own ice cream flavor.
An entrance fee will be charged to visit the main interactive exhibit area, but a portion of the exhibits will be open to the public at no charge.

Visit Lancaster County for FRESH Strawberry Amaretto Stuffed Toast

Strawberries are just coming into season in Lancaster County, so it's the perfect time of year for the Historic Smithton Inn's Strawberry Amaretto Stuffed French Toast recipe. But if you can't come to us (bummer!), here's the recipe so you can whip it up for youself at home!

Ingredients:
1 1/2 cup strawberries sliced
1 tablespoons sugar
1 1/2 cups whole milk
5 eggs
1/8 cup, plus 2 tbsp amaretto
2 tablespoons agave
1 loaves large, Italian baguette
2/3 cup ricotta cheese
Optional topping: Fresh sliced strawberries & powdered sugar with whipped cream on the side

Directions:

In a large saute pan over medium heat, combine strawberries, sugar and 2 tbsp amaretto. Stir gently until cooked, but still firm. Set aside to cool.
In a large bowl, combine mild, eggs, 1/8 cup amaretto and agave. Blend with hand-mixer.
Prepare the bread by first cutting off the heal. Then make 1/2 inch cuts with a bread knife, first 3/4 through the loaf, then all the way through. Continue until both baguettes are sliced.
Spread about 1 tbsp ricotta cheese into fold in bread. Top with about 2 tbsp strawberries. Place stuffed bread in baking dish.
Continue with remaining bread, using as many baking dishes as needed for a single layer of stuffed french toast.
Pour custard evenly over bread, making sure that the top and bottom halves are saturated, but not overly so. Pour out any excess custard from baking dish.
French toast slices can be individually frozen at this point.
Pre-Heat up a griddle to 300F. Spray with non-stick spray.
Cook stuffed french toast for 8 minutes a side, or until cooked through and outside is toasted light brown.
Serve with fresh strawberries and a dusting of powdered sugar on top and a side of whipped cream.

Amish Strawberry Bread - A Lancaster County Bed and Breakfast Favorite

I've never seen a cookbook I didn't NEED to own, and buying a bed and breakfast in Lancaster County opened up a whole new type of cooking... and therefore cookbooks... for me to try out. One of my favorite new cookbooks has earned that designation as much for the wonderful stories and photography as for the recipes. It's "The Amish Cook's Baking Book", and this particular recipe can be found on page 69... should you decide that you too NEED this fantastic book!

Amish Strawberry Bread

Ingredients:

2 large eggs

1/2 cup vegetable oil

1 cup sugar

1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/2 tsp almond extract

1 2/3 cups flour

1/2 tsp baking powder

1/2 tsp baking soda

1/2 tsp salt

1 1/2 cups chopped strawberries (fresh or lightly drained frozen)

1/2 cup chopped nuts of your choice (optional)

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
In a large bowl, beat the eggs until foamy.
Add the oil, sugar, vanilla and almond extract tot he eggs and mix well.
In another bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt.
Add to the oil mixture and stir until just barely moistened.
Add the strawberries and nuts and lightly mix, being careful not to overmix.
Pour into a prepared pan and bake until nicely browned and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, 50 minutes to an hour.

I don't normally reprint other people's articles in the Historic Smithton's blog, but this article lead me to make an exception! Last week we had the pleasure of hosting the Dodd family during their Family Vacation in Lancaster County. It turns out that Brian is a church stewardship and leadership consultant who writes a terrific blog where he uses his personal passion and experiences to gather and apply key learnings from the fields of leadership, sports, and church ministry. He took his experience here at the Historic Smithton Inn and translated it into advice about "Welcoming Guests". While the title references churches specifically, the advice transcends that particular niche to all areas of business and customer service.

This week I got to spend Spring Break in Amish Country, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. I know, not exactly the beach, but this is our 20th wedding anniversary and a gift for my wife who is fascinated by the Amish people.

The best part of this week has been staying at a local bed and breakfast called The Historic Smithton Inn operated by Innkeeper Rebecca Gallagher. If you’re ever passing through central PA, I can’t recommend this location enough. Just click on their name for more information.

Lancaster County B&B's Winter Renovations Unvealed

After the busy summer and fall season in 2010, the winter months are traditionally slower at the Historic Smithton Inn, and for the second year in a row, the innkeepers have put the lull in business to good use. This PA Dutch Country B&B used the winter months to spruce up, fix up, renovate and add amenities. In 2009 their the big push was to put cable TV into all the guest rooms, including flat screen TVs with DVD players. This year they got even more ambitious... check it out:

Guestroom #3 - the Chocolate Room: A fresh coat of paint and new curtains warmed up the feel of this room. It was always a favorite choice, especially among male guests who love the strong canopy bed and the bare brick fireplace, but now it's spruced up and lovely. A new desk and night stand were purchased from local nearby Adamstown antique shops. A new focal point in the room is a hooked rug that hangs between the front windows. It looks great and is a reminder of a 'regular' guest of the Historic Smithton Inn who made it especially for the Inn (thanks Karen!!!).

Guest Room #2 - the Yellow Room: This cheerful, charming guest room suffered from numerous of cracks in the plaster ceiling and outdated, curtains. All the cracks were repaired and the walls and ceiling were painted in a combination of yellow tones. The updated curtains are semi-custom with 'off the shelf' panels on top and a strip of floral linen on the bottom, allowing the curtains to just 'kiss' the floor. Extra fabric became accent pillows for the bed and chair. Two paintings by local artist Gladys ?? where purchased from the HeArt of Friendship art gallery in Downtown Ephrata. And finally, a new Tiffany style lamp compliments the sunflower designed hand-sewn quilt while brightening things up nicely.

Behind the Scenes - Keeping the Breeze OUTSIDE: Not all of the Historic Smithton's winter updates are obvious to guests, but they're impactful none the less. While the smell of fresh air is lovely, it's not such a good thing when you're standing inside front hallway and the door is closed! It's great to be able to spend the night in a B&B built in 1763, but unfortunately the Inn was stereotypically drafty. The solution: an infrared camera was brought in to identify problem spots and leaks. Foam insulation was sprayed where possible, all the the exterior doors were sealed up, and gaps around windows and along baseboards were caulked. This generally buttoned up things up and made the Inn both more energy efficient and more comfortable for guests.

A New Back Door: One problem drafty area was a window in the back hallway, on the way to Guestroom #1 - the Sage Room. By changing out an old, leaky window for a door, multiple benefits were achieved. Besides the improved energy efficiency, now there's a way for guests to access the back patio and garden without having to walk all the way around the house from the front, or alternately, pass through the kitchen. A additional security benefit came from a keypad entry handle that was installed on this door, allowing guests to type in a code to enter the building late at night, while keeping the other doors locked.

Drum Roll... the BEST Winter project is... !?!? On the first floor, also off the hallway that leads to Guest Room #1, was an old storage room. This cluttered, junky, generally yucky space has been transformed into a cloak-room / hallway that leads to... TWO new powder rooms!! Everything about this space is wonderful: the paint color is warm, the old wood floors shine, the wainscoting is in keeping with the property's history and makes the old stone window ledges 'pop'.

But while the design and style are attractive, what makes this project the big favorite is the benefit it affords both guests and staff at the Inn. With the addition of two powder rooms, the Historic Smithton is now a terrific option for parties and events, both indoors and out (the powder rooms are situated directly ahead of the new back door!). Staff no longer need to traipse up and down three flights of stairs every time they need to use the rest room (YEAH!!!), and guests have an option to use a first floor powder room rather than go to their guest room to use the facilities.

This year's winter renovations have proven to be exciting and welcome updates to an already lovely, historic Bed and Breakfast. They all compliment the history and charm of the inn, while enhancing guest comfort and enjoyment. Ephrata First Sunday Motorcycle Rally

On the first Sunday of each month, from March through November, motorcyclists of all kinds go roaring past the Historic Smithton Inn on their way to meet at the American Legion Post / Ephrata Park. This Sunday tradition has been going on for years, and those who gather, enjoy coffee, drinks and a breakfast buffet... not to mention good company of course.

Maya's Ready to Rolll!!

When? The next meet is Sunday, April 3, 2011. The Rally is always held the first Sunday of each month starting in March and ending in November - rain or shine. Motorcycles usually start showing up around 8AM and stay until about noon.

Why? The people who show up enjoy motorcycles, talking about motorcycles, riding motorcycles, etc... (you get the idea)

Tour de Ephrata 2011 - A Bike Race with Something for Everyone

The Tour de Ephrata is a one-day bike racing celebration taking place May 1, 2011. World-class races will be taking place from noon - 6pm, but the fun doesn't stop there. This year's event organizers have lined up events for casual cyclists and kiddos too, so there's truly something for everyone!

At 2:00 pm there will be a "Celebrity Race" where you can compete against Senator Mike Brubaker, Ephrata Mayor Ralph Mowen, Akron Mayor John McBeth and others for this year's bragging rights!! The kids races will begin at 3:00 pm. And for everyone who's more interested in watching the action than joining it, there will be food vendors galore for your culinary pleasure from noon - 5:00 pm!!

I've enjoyed reading all the blog and facebook posts out there announcing that Spring is finally here: daffodils are coming into bloom, we no longer need to wear those heavy jackets and you can't help notice that it's still light at 7:30 pm! There are many reasons to be glad for the arrival of Spring, not the least of which is the return of civilized electric bills! But one of the things I'm looking forward to most is SPRING EXTRAVAGANZA WEEKEND!

What's that you ask? Well even if you've never heard of it, you can tell by the name that it's something big... and that it is. Spring Extravaganza Weekend is to Antique enthusiasts what Sundance is to film buffs.

Recipe of the Month: Quinoa with Toasted Almonds & Cranberries

One of the many ways we ensure our guests enjoy their stay at the Smithton Inn is by accommodating a whole host of dietary needs and restrictions. Lactose Intolerance, Diabetic, Vegetarian, Vegan and Gluten Free are just some of the needs we cater to when whipping up our delicious breakfasts. This particular recipe I made for the first time when a guest let me know she was a Vegan, but it also happens to be Gluten Free.

That said, I have NONE of these dietary restrictions, but I LOVE this dish. It's got a wonderful flavor and texture, plus it's high in protein. Give it a shot, how often does "healthy" and "tastes good" come together?!

Ingredients
1 cup quinoa
½ cup slivered blanched almonds
1 cube vegetable broth
1 ½ cups boiling water
½ tsp salt
1 cinnamon stick
1 bay leaf
½ cup dried cranberries

Directions
Over medium heat, stir and toast the slivered almonds until golden.
Add the quinoa and toast a few more minutes until the quinoa begins to darken
Transfer the toasted quinoa and almonds to a 2 quart saucepan and add the remaining ingredients.
Bring to a boil, covered, then reduce the heat to simmer for 20 minutes.
Remove from heat, remove the cinnamon stick and bay leaf and allow to sit for 5 minutes.
Fluff gently with a fork and serve.

The tour takes place every weekend in March, and for just $25, you can attend wine tastings at 13 participating vineyards. Celebrate the arrival of new vintages with special tank and barrel tastings to preview the season’s upcoming wines before they are bottled. Meet UnCork York winemakers as they share an inside look at the winemaking process. Along the way you’ll enjoy delicious treats and great company!

Berks Jazz Fest Kicks Off March 25th

I sometimes forget that on of the many advantages the Smithton Inn enjoys by being situated in Ephrata, is that we're pretty much smack-dab in the middle of Lancaster City and Reading! I'm always pointing out the fun and wonderful things to do in Lancaster... but this week it's Reading's turn, with the 21st Annual Berks Jazz Fest, one of the largest Jazz festivals in the country with over 130 scheduled events.

The Jazz Fest runs ten (10) days, from Friday March 25th to Sunday April 3rd, at multiple venues in the Reading area. The performance styles run the gamut of jazz and blues, the performers hale from around the world and their talent spans the generations including old favorites and up-and-comers. The organizers boast that this year's performers feature some of the hottest names in contemporary and traditional jazz, blues, R&B, fusion and more.

In fact, two artists scheduled to perform at the Jazz Fest won Grammy Awards in Los Angeles last month!

Stanley Clarke won the award for Best Contemporary Jazz Album for The Stanley Clarke Band: On Saturday, March 26, at 2 p.m., he and his band are performing with the Victor Wooten Band for an afternoon of legendary electric bass at the Crowne Plaza Reading Hotel ballroom.

And Kirk Whalum won a Grammy for Best Gospel Song, a songwriter's award, for the track "It's What I Do," from The Gospel According to Jazz Chapter III. Whalum will join Grammy nominee Gerald Albright, Peter White and Jeff Golub as part of Guitars & Saxes on Sunday, March 27, at 7 p.m. at the Sovereign Performing Arts Center.

What DO Those Town Names Mean??

For visitors to Lancaster County, one of the first clues this is a place with a charming and fascinating history comes with a glance at a map. As you pass through towns like "Paradise" and "Blue Ball", you may wonder where those towns got their storybook names. The origins of many of the towns and villages have, unfortunately, been lost to history. But here are brief backgrounds on several of them:

Intercourse
There is much speculation about the origins of this village's name, which was founded in 1754 and originally called Cross Keys.

Two of the more popular theories involve a race course and an intersection. There was apparently an old race course just east of the town, which had a long driveway called the "enter-course". Some believe this eventually evolved into "Intercourse," which became the name of the village in 1814.

The other theory centers around two roads - the old King's Highway between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, now Route 340 (Old Philadelphia Pike), and the road from Wilmington, Edl., to Erie, whihc intersected it in teh middle. That intersection is thought by some to be the basis for teh name "Intercourse"

Paradise
According to records, this town to the east of Lancaster was named when one Joshua Scott, who later became known for his map of the county, stood in the middle of a road admiring his surroundings.

He remarked that the town should be called Paradise, and most people agreed wtih him. That was in 1804. In 1843, folks in teh surrounding township decided they weren't satisfied with their name, which at that time was Pequea. So the people of Pequea Township took their cue from teh nearby village and the entire township became Paradise.

Blue Ball
Like many towns in teh nation's early days, this hamlet took tis name from a tavern, which was located "at the sign of the Blue Ball," established by Robert Wallace in 1766.

Kinzers
This village was named not for a tavern but for a hotel, which was built by a gentleman named Harry Kinzer in 1834 for men who worked on the railroad in the area.

Bareville
This town just east of New Holland was named for the physician Dr. A.S. Bare, who was one of several founders in the mid-1800s.

Bird in Hand

The old legend of the naming of Bird-in-Hand concers the time when the Old Philadelphia Pike was being laid out between Lancaster and Philadelphia.

The story goes that two road surveyors working on the construction project discussed whether they should stay at their present location or go on to the town of Lancaster. One of them supposedly said, "A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush," which means it is preferable to have a small but certain advantage than the mere potential of a greater one; and so they stayed. By 1734, road surveyors were making McNabb’s hotel their headquarters rather than returning to Lancaster every day. The sign in front of the inn is known to have once "portrayed a man with a bird in his hand and a bush nearby, in which two birds were perched," and was known as the Bird-in-Hand Inn.

Another variation on the story also relates to the prominent tavern sign. The Conestoga wagoners (many of whom could drive a team of six horses a lot better than they could read) knew that they had arrived at the Bird-in-Hand Hotel by seeing its distinctive sign - which became the defacto name for the village over time.

Ephrata
The borough of Ephrtata was founded in 1732 and is named after Ephrath, a biblical town in what is now Israel. The community was named by Conrad Beisel and his followers, who were the first settlers in the area. They founded what is now know as the Ephrata Cloister along the Cocalico Creek.

As you can see, the story behind the names of Lancaster County towns and villages are as diverse as the communities themselves. Hopefully learning about their origins has provided enough of a tease to make you want to visit, explore and discover more for yourself... which is easy to do when you base yourself at the Historic Smithton Inn... we've got great accessibility to all these quaint towns.

Fire and Ice Festival this weekend

One of my favorite things about Lancaster County is the festivals… there are LOTS of them, celebrating every aspect of life in the area. Without a doubt, one of the best of the winter festivals is Fire and Ice in Lititz. It’s organized by the Lititz Lions Club, and combines ice sculpting event with a chili cookoff for a weekend of sensory overload. There are nearly 100 blocks of ice distributed around the downtown area, and artists sculpt them right in front of you… so you can watch the pieces emerge as you shop in Lititz's wonderful boutiques.

Schedule:

The ice sculpting “block party” (pun intended) is this Friday, 2/18 from 5:00 – 9:00 pm along Main Street

The Chili Cookoff is on Saturday, 2/19 in the Warwick High School Cafeteria from 11:00 – 3:00 pm with a Winter Carnival taking place simultaneously in the gym.

The weekend wraps up Sunday with “Skating & Fun”.

Ephrata Main Update - Three Great Acts Coming our Way

The Ephrata Main Theater, Lancaster County's newest live entertainment venue, has three concerts coming up that are sure to draw good crowds. Three women, each with their own unique style, but with one thing in common - MAN can they sing!

First up, on Sunday, February 20th (a holiday weekend, so hopefully you've got Monday off!) is Shemekia Copeland, with special guest Clarence Spady. Shemekia is a highly acclaimed blues singer - check out her performance on the David Letterman Show from 2009. We bought our tickets to this show the moment it was announced, based on the OPENING act... I can't imagine how good Shemekia will be if Clarance is warming up for HER (the guy is amazing!!).

The next show on the schedule is Ana Popovic, playing on Saturday March 12th. Another blues artist, Ana has been hailed as the 'most popular female blues singner and guitar player in the world'. One look at this video of Ana playing live in Amsterdam and you can see where she got the designation. Ana is from Belgrade, Yugoslavia and has wow'd audiences around the world. She recently played with B.B. King in Bonn, Germany!

And finally, Iris Dement arrives on Wednesday, March 23rd to grace the Ephrata crowd with her unique 'folk / country' style. Dement made her recording debut in 1992, and "Infamous Angel" won almost universal acclaim thanks to her pure, evocative vocal style and spare, heartfelt songcraft. If you saw the recent remake of True Grit, you may have caught Iris' version of "Everlasting Arms" at the end of the movie!

And don't forget, the Smithton Inn Bed and Breakfast is just 1 mile west of the Ephrata Main Theater. It's the perfect combination for a night out on the town!

Lancaster County Mud Sales Coming Soon

As winter gives way to Spring in Lancaster County, some people look forward to longer days, others envision flowers in bloom... I can't wait to tromp through muddy fields in search of great shopping finds at one of Lancaster County's many annual Mud Sales.

Each year, local fire companies host "Mud Sales" as community fundraisers. The sales are set in local fields, which are often muddy from melting snow or rain... thus the name... no acutal MUD is for sale. The late Winter and early Spring dates work out best for local farmers because they have more time available before the Spring planting.

Often auctions are held both inside and outside simultaneously. Sometimes numerous auctions take place at the same time throughout the grounds. So, if you're not into tromping through fields, there are still options for you!

The items sold vary from auction to auction and include a wide variety of donated goods and consignment merchandise. Auctioned items often include furniture, craft items, quilts, building materials, livestock, buggies and carriages, tools, farming supplies and equipment, garden items, and much more. Plus, lots of good food.

So make plans to come stay at the Historic Smithton and take in some true Pennyslvania Dutch culture during this year's Mud Sales. You'll have a blast & will hopefully go home with a new treasure (or two or three!).

Recipe of the Month: Pesto, Provolone & Red Pepper Strata

I absolutely love breakfast stratas! They're easy dishes you "make-ahead" (aka - perfect for brunches), but best of all at the Smithton Inn is that stratas are a delicious way for us to use our day-old homemade Italian Herb bread.

I'm also a big fan of Pesto, which is probably why I was drawn to this particular recipe (which I adapted from a quiche). If you're wondering what the pesto will make the dish LOOK like, never fear... it will NOT look like you're eating 'Green Eggs'... as you can see from the photo. Enjoy!!

Pesto, Provolone & Red Pepper Strata

Ingredients:
8 slices Italian Herb Bread (or bread of your choice)
3 tablespoons pesto
1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
5 eggs
1 1/2 cups milk
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 cups shredded Provolone cheese (8 oz)
1/2 cup chopped roasted red bell pepper

Directions:

Pre-Heat oven to 375°F
Cut bread into 1 inch cubes, set aside.
In medium bowl, mix pesto, Parmesan cheese, eggs, milk and salt until completely blended.
Spray a 9 x 9 baking dish with Pam
Add half the bread to the bottom of the baking dish (enough to cover the bottom). Top with half the roasted red bell peppers and then half the Provolone cheese. Repeat with remaining bread, peppers & cheese.
Pour blended egg mixture over top, making sure to moisten all the bread.
Cover with foil, refrigerate overnight (can be frozen at this stage)
With foil in place, bake strata 30 minutes. Remove the foil and cook 30 minutes longer or until the egg is completely set (if top becomes too brown, put the foil back on). Let stand for 5 minutes before serving.

Variations: Replace red peppers with cherry tomatoes, asparagus or mushrooms. And/Or, add a meat to your layers such as sausage, chicken sausage or bacon.

Euro Cuisine Yogurt Machine & Yogourmet Yogurt Starter: This was the most often requested item over the last year, "How do you make that yogurt?" is a regular question at breakfast and in follow up emails. Making your own yogurt is so easy to do, plus it's economical & better for the environment!

Christmas at the Cloister - An Annual Lancaster County Tradition

There's no better way to get into the spirit of the Christmas Season than attending the Ephrata Cloister Choir's annual "Christmas at the Cloister" event. The concert is an annual event which goes back to 1966 and is carried on today by the Cloister's entirely volunteer, very talented choir. The program is a collection of biblical readings and music presented in the historic Saal. Seating is limited and advance tickets are required.

If you're wondering what the concert is like, here's a clip of the choir performing Dixit Maria during last year's Christmas at the Cloister concert. While the video gives you a 'sense' of the event, it doesn't do justice to the feeling you get sitting in this historic room, listening to the angelic voices of the choir... you simply have to see it for yourself!

Evening of the Blues with Clarence Spady, with special guests the Godinez Brothers

Looking for something to add to the mix of football, turkey and shopping this Thanksgiving holiday weekend? Why not spice things with a get-away weekend and live Blues music?

The Main Theater in Ephrata has a show scheduled on Friday the 26th that looks like a winner. Here’s what Philip Yurkon of Tempe, AZ had to say about Clarence Spady in a February 2003 review of Spady's album “Nature of the Beast”

I have had the good fortune of living near Spady. The River Street Jazz Café, where Spady routinely plays and has recently celebrated his 15th year playing there, is only a few miles from my parents' home in Exeter, PA. Also, my guitar teacher back there has studied and gigged with Spady, so this is the story as I've been told.

After listening to this album, it's no wonder why he was given a deal. Spady received accolades here in the states and in Europe. But sadly, his use of drugs, as noted in songs like "Nature of the Beast" and "Change My Way of Living", unraveled his career. Spady's band eventually left him after he would fail to appear at out of state gigs and he would be in and out of jail on a regular basis. Spady still gigs frequently in the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton area, where he is regarded amongst local musicians as the hippest cat that'll ever grace the stages at local bars.

In light of his unfortunate demise, there's no doubting his talent. Spady has upstaged the likes of Buddy Guy at blues festivals and has earned the respect of legends like Robben Ford. He has flaked on gigs in prominent New York night clubs and still gets booked because he's such a huge draw. During breaks in his sets in NYC it isn't uncommon for him to be hassled for his autograph from people with British and French accents, some people not even speaking English. Although "Nature of the Beast" is a great album, it's really nothing compared to him live. When you see him live and he plays his super-funky version of "Se La Vie", then turns it around into "Cissy Strut" and finishes the trio with his original "Riding in Fast Cars", you're left breathless and wanting more.

"Nature of the Beast" shows Spady's potential. This is more of an R&B album, more than it is a blues album, as seen with tunes like "Baby Baby Baby", "A Good Fool is Hard to Find", and "Bad Axe". Spady takes some good solos in this album, but his rhythms really make the album, along with some great help from the band. Unlike many other blues musicians, Clarence uses many influences in his playing. He has bits of every type of good black music in his playing, from traditional blues, to jazz, to funk, to gospel, to R&B. Clarence is so good that he never gives it 100% when he's being recorded because he doesn't want anyone copying his licks. One must take that into consideration when listening to this album.

All in all, this is a wonderful album and is enough to give me my Spady fix while I'm away from home. If you're in the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton area of PA, be sure to see if he's playing. A live experience will send you to heaven, and you'll leave knowing exactly what I mean when I say that his album really is nothing compared to him live. Even in light of the fact that he gigs as a three-piece now, with Bob O'Connel on keys and Sharon Smith on drums, he always pulls it off better than the album, no easy task. And lets's hold on to some hope that maybe, just maybe he'll change his way of living and record another album and follow up on it this time. There's no doubt in my mind that if he wanted it, Clarence would be the next big thing, the next SRV, the next Robben Ford, the next guitar hero.

Veterans Day at the Smitnton Inn

The Historic Smithton Inn was proud to celebrate Veterans Day this year by donating all seven of our guestrooms to Veterans as part of the nationwide "BnBs for Vets" program.

The group we hosted was a diverse one - coming from different states, serving in different branches of the military, and fighting in wars that spanned generations - from the Korean War to Iraq and Afghanistan. But all had one thing in common - they proudly served our country.

We were honored to host this impressive group of individuals and thoroughly enjoyed hearing their stories and listening to them all bond with one another over breakfast - quickly becoming like old friends! We look forward to participating in the BnBs for Vets program again next year.

Recipe of the Month: Meat Lover's Strada

What do you do when you can't decide between bacon or sausage for breakfast? Use BOTH of course (duh...!)! This recipe was inspired by one of those moments recently, and the result got lots of thumbs-up and recipe requests, so I thought I'd share it with all of you this month!

Ingredients:
12 slices thick-cut bread (I use our homemade Italian Herb bread)
1 lb. hickory smoked bacon
1 lb. mild breakfast sausage
2 tomatoes, thinly sliced
1 1/2 cups Irish Cheddar Cheese
12 eggs
1 cup whole milk
1 cup Ranch Dressing
1/2 cup butter, melted

Directions:

Spray a 9 x 13 baking dish with non-stick spray
In separate pans, cook bacon and sausage. Crumble each & allow too cool.
Cut bread into cubes. Line bottom of baking dish with half the bread.
Distribute all of the bacon over the bread. Top with 1 tomato (sliced), then half the cheese.
Top with remaining bread
Add remaining layer of sausage, tomato and cheese.
In a separate bowl, combine eggs, milk and ranch dressing. Pour evenly over strada.
Drizzle butter over top.

Cover. Refrigerate overnight. (can be frozen at this point)

In the morning, remove from refrigerator 30 minutes before baking. Pre-heat oven to 350. Cook for 30 minutes covered with foil. Remove foil and cook for 30 additional minutes or until cooked through. put foil back on if top becomes too brown.
Allow to cool for 5 minutes, cut and serve.

New Feature: Recipe of the Month

Typically this Blog has been devoted to stories about local events or activities that guests can enjoy when they visit Lancaster County and the Smithton Inn. But lets face it, one of the best things about staying in a Bed and Breakfast is.... (drum roll)... the breakfast! So, I decided that it made sense to include some of our favorite recipes in this blog; and for the first one I'm sharing the breakfast we made this morning. With fall finally in the air, the smell of baking apples, cinnamon & nutmeg just seemed fitting.

Apple Puffed Pancake

Ingredients:
8 medium apples
3 tbsp unsalted butter
2/3 cups packed light brown sugar
2 tsp ground cinnamon
3/4 tsp ground nutmeg

1 1/4 cup pancake mix
2/3 cups milk
2 tbsp sugar
2 tbsp vegetable oil
2 eggs

Directions:
Pre-Heat oven to 375 degrees

Peel, core and cut the apples into 1/4 inch thick slices.
Heat the butter in a sauté pan over medium heat until it starts to foam
Add the apples and cook them until tender, about 10 minutes.
Turn off the heat and stir in the brown sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg. Set aside
In medium bowl, combine pancake mix, milk, sugar, vegetable oil and eggs. Beat with wire whisk until smooth.
Spray two (2) pie tins with non-stick spray (Pam)
Divide fruit between pans, top with pancake mixture.
Bake 20 - 25 minutes or until golden brown.
Flip onto a large plate, cut into 4-6 wedges. Sprinkle with confectioner’s sugar.

Serve with whipped cream on the side.

Smithton Inn's Guests Make News and Memories

Recently we've had a few "newsworthy" guests stay with us at the Smithton Inn Bed and Breakfast. Both are fun stories we'd like to share.

Our first guests to make the news are Nole and Beverly Graybill. These guys are the hardest working couple I know, and that's saying a lot since I know some pretty driven folks! It probably helps that they're working for such a wonderful cause. They've been visiting Lancaster County to talk to high-end kitchen cabinetry makers, so that the companies will recommend Nole & Beverly's organization, Green Demolitions, to their customers. Click here to see the story broadcast on WGAL (Lancaster's NBC Affiliate). This story is terrific because it combines being "green", saving money and helping others, all into one!

Our latest guest in the news is Tom Richards, a guest from Chicago who stayed with us for a week while coming home for his 50th Ephrata High School Class Reunion!

Tom spent his week in Ephrata catching up with old friends and playing a LOT of golf. In addition to being a proud member of Ephrata's Class of 1960, Tom was a freshman, the one and only year that the Ephrata football team went undefeated.

So as you can see, guests at the Smithton Inn aren't just staying at a bed and breakfast with history... sometimes they're making a bit of it themselves! I can't guarantee you'll make the news when you come here, but you'll definitely make some wonderful memories.

Lancaster Lingo 101

With fall being such a popular time of year to visit Lancaster County, I thought a PA Dutch Lingo-Lesson would be a good idea. No, we're not talking about the latest dance craze! The locals here in Lancaster County have a distinct dialect, much like other regions of the U.S. such as the deep south or Louisiana's Cajun country. The dialect in this area is often referred to as "Dutchy" (makes sense!) . Here are a few phrases to help you along when you encounter the locals!

"When're yous comin' to Lancaster County, here nah?"

The phrase "here nah" doesn't mean a whole lot, just something to dress up the end of the sentence when delivered in a melodic manner. Translation: When are you coming to Lancaster County? "Yous" is a word that gets a lot of play here... basically it's he equivalent to "ya'll".

A couple phrases found on gift shop potholders:

"Throw Father down the stairs his hat!" and "Throw the cow over the fence some hay!". They're good demonstrations of the difference in grammar and word order in the local dialect. Neither father nor the cow are being thrown anywhere... thank goodness!

A few restaurant phrases you may encounter:

If you ask your waitress about the steak special and she says, "I'm so sorry, it's all." Translation: All gone.

You're waiting for your breakfast to arrive and you hear, "Do yous want some coffee awhile? Translation: While you wait.

And a couple more for good measure:

"Don't forget to outen the light." Translation: Turn out the light.

"What for chairs do you want?" Translation: What do you want those chairs for?

"The hurrier I go, the behinder I get." Translation? I won'ner, can you figure that one out without the translation?!

And finally, one of my personal favorites! :

"When you come over - come out, and eat yourself full."

Translation: When you're in the area, drop by, and fill up on the Smithton Inn's delicious breakfasts!!

Our series of mini-itineraries continues with a selection of things to do in PA Dutch Country during the first half of October. The PA Reniassance Faire is still taking place duing this time, so if any of my picks don't suite you, it's a wonderful fall-back! Friday 10/1 - Sunday 10/3:

Friday: First Friday in Lancaster, October 1: http://www.lancasterarts.com/firstfridays. If you’ve never heard of “First Friday”, or the variations on the theme, you’re in for a treat. Local communities in Lancaster County typically choose one day during the month to showcase local shops, galleries and restaurants. Often businesses stay open a bit later than normal, and there’s some street entertainment as an extra attraction. First Fridays in Lancaster are a special treat, so definitely try to get here early enough to check it out.

Saturday: Bridge Bust, Columbia, PA October 2nd: http://www.pavendors.com/events/york-county/wrightsville-october-bridgebust.htm . A recent guest at the Smithton put me onto this event. It’s an annual arts and crafts festival with more than 300 antiques, crafts, arts and food vendors plus entertainment held on the Columbia-Wrightsville Bridge (officially known as Veterans Memorial Bridge) Proceeds from this event benefit the Susquehanna Valley Visitors Center. This is a very popular event and draws over 20,000 visitors. I’m looking forward to checking it out!
Saturday / Sunday: Lancaster's Fall Art Walk, Oct 2 – 3: http://lancasterartwalk.org/ . For art lovers out there, this is the weekend for the Lancaster ArtWalk, a self-guided tour of downtown galleries. The Fall ArtWalk has over 25 shops and galleries participating and is a great way to explore Lancaster’s wonderful, unique downtown district. Special exhibitions, meet-the-artist events, children’s activities and live demonstrations are all available for discovery within the bustling independent galleries of Lancaster city.
Saturday / Sunday: Harvest Festival, October 2 - 3: http://www.bvwinetrail.com/trail_events.cfm . Experience the sights and smells of harvest and have a grape stompin’ good time as the eight wineries of the Brandywine Valley Wine Trail celebrate the 2010 vintage! You’ll find grapes galore as the vineyards commence harvest activities. Enjoy pastoral settings for picnicking, live music to "sit n’ sip" or dance by, grape stomping competitions, hayrides through the vineyards, BBQs, wine tastings & tours.

Friday 10/8 - Sunday 10/10:

Friday / Saturday: Apple Dumplings and Musical Delights at the Ephrata Cloister, Oct 8 - 9: http://www.ephratacloister.org/events.htm . For over 25 years, the Ephrata Cloister has hosted this annual PA Dutch Tradition. Apple dumplings are sold on at the Historic Site Friday and Saturday, beginning at 9:30 a.m. each day. On Friday sales will continue until 4 p.m. and on Saturday they will continue until the last dumplings are sold. An entire meal will also be available on Saturday with the addition of hot dogs, homemade vegetable soup and coffee available. This is a delicious way to invest in the preservation of history.
Saturday: Lititz Chocolate Walk, Oct 9: http://chocolatewalk.homestead.com/index.html . A "Chocolate for Charity" event, the Lititz Chocolate Walk brings together some of the regions most talented chefs and candy makers for a fun and unique way of raising money for local charities. Walkers with button & punch-card in hand, follow their maps through historic downtown Lititz where chocolate treats are given out at each of the 30 locations this year. Think “Trick-or-Treat” for grownups!
Saturday / Sunday: Harvest Days at the Pumpkin Patch, Landis Valley Museum, Oct 9 – 10: http://www.landisvalleymuseum.org/cgi-bin/eventsdetail.cgi?Year=2010&Month=10&Day=09 . Come see 1700s and 1800s harvest, cooking and craft demonstrations. Horse drawn wagon rides, pick your own pumpkins from the patch, and enjoy plenty of hands-on children's activities. Each week I try to write a blog post about a particular attraction or event that I think Smithton guests would enjoy. I’ve been really struggling this week though… because there’s simply SO much going on. So here’s my solution, I’ll break this up into a two-parter for you all and tell you what I’d do each weekend.

Seriously, the weather is fantastic right now, we’re in the middle of fall harvest, and then there are all these wonderful events to choose from… what more reason could you need to visit Lancaster county?!

All the local dealers and shops pull out the stops, and with Adamstown (aka: Antique Capital U.S.A.) just 6 miles up the road, you’ll be perfectly situated for hitting the best shops & stands in the county.

92nd Annual Ephrata Fair – The Largest Street Fair in PA

It’s “Fair Season” in Lancaster County, so I’m reminded that the BIG fair of the bunch, in Ephrata, is just around the corner. And my favorite thing about the Ephrata Fair is the Smithton Inn’s location! We’re close enough to walk to ALL the festivities, but we’re located OUTSIDE the road-closure zone. Let me assure you, this is a very good thing!

Not familiar with the Ephrata Fair? Well, it’s definitely a Lancaster County community event worth experiencing…here’s an overview & a few highlights:

During the week of September 21 - 25, Pennsylvania's largest Street Fair transforms the streets of downtown Ephrata from busy roads with cars and trucks to a week of enjoyment and entertainment. Both Main and State Streets (downtown) are closed to make room for rides and local food stands, offering fun, relaxation and a chance to mingle with friends. Also scattered throughout town are displays of food, vegetables, crafts and the Agriculture exhibit at the park.

There's a New Reason to Visit to Ephrata - LIVE Music!

When Steve Brown, owner of Ephrata’s best known restaurant, Lily’s on Main, took over the Ephrata Main Movie Theater back in January, he had plans to expand beyond movies into live entertainment. Luckily for us, his plans have panned out. Performances are starting next week with a BIG intro act… Joan Osborne… that’s right, a 6-time Grammy nominee is coming to EPHRATA!

Steve’s plan is to book "mid-level" acts that are too small for American Music Theatre and too big for the Chameleon Club at the 193 seat, historic theater.

Here’s a list of the performers currently booked to play the Ephrata Main Theater, along with some videos to give you an idea of what’s in store. The Ephrata Main Theatre is proud to announce the debut of our Artist in Residence Program with our first show in this series featuring Adam Taylor. Adam Taylor is a Pennsylvania poet with a guitar, whose old school soul can be felt through his visually quirky, socially conscious lyrics and ragtime inspired folk-pop. Channeling the spirit of Bob Dylan, Taylor defies his youth with his timeless confidence and renegade attitude. His debut EP, Play the Piano Drunk, was produced by Adam's older brother and mentor, LIVE founding member Chad Taylor. Unlike his brother, the younger Taylor brings a wryer approach to his music, literate like his idols Charles Bukowski and Saul Williams, yet still boyishly brazen. The Gracious Few

Lancaster County Hosts Art Festivals and Craft Shows EVERY weekend through mid-September

Late Summer is definitely the time for Art and Craft Festivals in Lancaster County. Lititz, Mt. Gretna, Lancaster and Ephrata are all homes to annual festivals that vendors and visitors alike look forward to each year. Every festival is unique, but one thing is certain... art lovers will find a great variety of works while enjoying charm of Lancaster County.

Here's a run-down of the shows coming up between mid-August and mid-September:

Lititz Rotary Craft Show: Saturday, August 14, 2010. 8:00 am – 4:00 pm. Location: Lititz Springs Park, 18 N Broad St. Lititz PA 17543.

One of the biggest and most popular craft shows on the east coast, the Lititz Rotary Club's Craft Show brings downtown Lititz to a halt. Over 700 crafters line Lititz Springs Park as well as Broad and Main Streets with booths of interesting crafts and artwork. Parking is well orchestrated and trolleys run often.

Mount Gretna Art Show: August 21 – 22, 2010. 9:00 am – 6:00 pm Saturday, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm Sunday, Rain or Shine. The show is presented under the oaks of the Chautauqua section of Mount Gretna between Route 117 and Pennsylvania Avenue. http://www.mtgretnaarts.com

Every year, during the third weekend of August, this community of some 700 homes and cottages suddenly springs to life, welcoming 285 artists chosen through juried competition and 20,000 visitors who—by their presence—acknowledge the role that art plays in their homes, hearts, and lives.

The Weathervane Art Show: August 28, 2010 from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm. The Landis Valley Museum Store is hosting this special day for local artists and craftspeople to demonstrate and sell their work. Experience one of America’s leading fine art and craft shows. The four-day long Long’s Park Art & Craft Festival takes place each Labor Day weekend in a beautiful city park on the edge of Downtown Lancaster. Showcasing 200 top artists and craftspeople from across the United States, Canada and beyond, the show juries applications from more than 1,000 annually. All proceeds benefit the free Long’s Park Summer Music Series.

37th Annual Art & Craft Festival & Restaurant Fair: September 11, 2010 from 9:00 am – 3:00 pm. Downtown Square, Ephrata.

This festival offers more than 200 artisans displaying arts and crafts plus local restaurants offering favorite foods. Exhibits will include all types of handmade art and craft work. All work must be original, not produced commercially or from kits, and must be for sale (unless displayed in the Commercial Vendor area.) Arts and crafts displays will be placed on the East and West Main Streets and South State Streets in Ephrata. Commercial vendor displays will be placed on North State Street. Demonstrations are encouraged.

30 Years of Jousting, Knights and Royal Delights!

One thing remains a certainty in Amish Country - - visitors encounter many different facets of the unconventional America, from horse-drawn carriages, to windmills and covered bridges, to the many delicious tastes, both plain and fancy, of our many fine restaurants. Yet, there is another experience for those of you planning a late summer and early fall trip to the area, the opportunity to experience the 30th Annual Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire!

Midway between Lancaster and Hershey (just 16 miles from the Smithton Inn Bed and Breakfast), on Route 72, set against the backdrop of Victorian Mount Hope Estate & Winery, the Faire is celebrating it's 30th season, where fairegoers once again are transported back in time some 450 years to Merrie Olde England. Meet Queen Elizabeth I who presides over the festivities, along with her 100s of costumed subjects, some of whom swallow swards, juggle, breathe fire and direct falcons. The multitude of interactive theaters, arts and crafts booths and food stands are sure to add to the adventure of the day.

The Faire runs 12 weekends from August 14th through October 31st. Faire hours are 11 am - 8 pm. Admission is $29.95 for adults & $9.95 for children 5 - 11, and includes parking, games, performances & rides. Food and crafts are an additional fee.
